Importance
Of Back-Ground Music
If
you see a picture or a video, there is music also following that picture or that
video. But very few really observe that music, known as the BACK-GROUND MUSIC. It
may sound very drastic, but the fact is to compose and record a back-ground
music for a film of say duration 2 ½ to 3 hours, its takes nearly 1 ½ to 2
months to complete it. So what this background music and why is it so important
for a scene, let’s see.
Now
when we watch a horror film we get really scared, but if we mute [off] the sound
and see the film, there will be no horror, no effect. So basically music can
uplift and dramatize a scene, so that a viewer can really visualize himself
sitting with scene and watching it.
In
Indian films there are songs, where as in English films there are a very few
films with songs. So what a song does in a Hindi film, the background music does
it in English films. Of lately the back – ground music in Hindi films have
improved. In doing a back- ground music a Music Director may even use an orchestra of
400 to 500 musicians, if required or to get the desired effect.
In
music all instruments have emotions and are defined to be used for a specific
emotion to be conveyed. Like if there is a sad, emotional scene then mostly
voilin,group voilins,chorus,alaaps,sarangi, sitar,veena are used. These
instruments convey the depth of sadness to a very large extend and Music
Directors use these instruments and exploit their musical value. Now for romantic
scenes, mostly guitars,pianos,flutes,saxaphones,chorus, are used. For suspense instruments
like bass guitar, group violins, tabla, drums, percussions or natural effects
like wind,storm,rainfall are used.
In
composing the back-ground music, there are options like heavy and light orchestration.
In heavy orchestration many instruments are harmonized together, where as in
light orchestration only a single instrument is used. Use of heavy or light
orchestration entirely depends upon the director of the project and his creativity.
Some Music Directors experiment with new sounds. And in Hindi films new sounds and new western instruments are been used, giving viewers a completely new sound to hear. A film with a good back- ground music is basically the director’s way to define the scenes.
